چکیده

We study the relation between out-of-equilibrium (hysteretic) and equilibrium behavior in the capillary condensation of Ñuids in disordered mesoporous solids. Using mean-Ðeld density functional theory, we show that a simple lattice-gas model can reproduce the major experimental observations and that the classical van der Waals picture of metastability fails due the appearance of many metastable states. We Ðnd that (i) a true equilibrium capillary phase transition may occur when the perturbation induced by the solid is sufficiently small ; (ii) hysteresis does not necessarily imply the existence of this phase transition ; (iii) the disappearance of the hysteresis loop is not associated with capillary criticality ; and (iv) thermodynamic consistency is violated along the adsorptionÈdesorption isotherms.

Light scattering study of collective effects during evaporation and condensation in a disordered porous material

We combine high-resolution isotherms measurements and light scattering technics to study over a broad temperature range collective effects during the condensation and evaporation of helium from Vycor, a prototypic disordered porous material. For evaporation, our results provide the first direct evidence for a crossover from a percolation collective mechanism at low temperature to a local cavita...

Slip flow in porous micro-tubes under local thermal non-equilibrium conditions

In the present work, forced convection heat transfer of slip flow in porous micro-tubes with local thermal non-equilibrium between the gas and the solid matrix is investigated numerically. For this purpose, the flow is considered hydrodynamically developed but thermally developing. The Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer model in conjunction with separate energy equations for the gas and the solid matri...

Introduction of a Novel Two-Dimensional Equation of State to Predict Gas Equilibrium Adsorption in Highly-Nonideal Systems

Abstract The accurate calculations of adsorption equilibrium for multicomponent gas systems are of great importance in many applications. In this paper, five two-dimensional equations of state 2D-EOS, i.e. Van der Waals, Eyring, Zhou-Ghasem-Robinson, Soave-Redlich-Kwong and Peng-Robinson, were examined to find out their abilities to predict adsorption equilibrium for pure and multi-component ga...

Experimental and Theoretical Study of Phase Equilibria in Aqueous Mixtures of Lactic Acid with Benzyl Alcohol and p-Xylene at Various Temperatures

Liquid-liquid equilibria for the (water + lactic acid + benzyl alcohol or p-xylene) ternary systems were investigated at atmospheric pressure and in the temperature range from 298.15-318.15 K. The studied systems exhibit two types of liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) behavior. The system consisting of benzyl alcohol displays type-1 LLE behavior, while a type-2 behavior is exhibited by th...
